Blackjack rules, strategies, and house edge
Blackjack (also known as 21) is one of the most played and beloved casino games in the world. Its charm lies in a unique combination of luck and skill: the player's decisions have a direct and significant mathematical impact on the game's outcome. At Jackpot Cow Casino, we are proud to offer a wide spectrum of different Blackjack games, suitable for both beginners and experienced strategists.
Basic objective of the game
The goal of Blackjack is simple but often misunderstood. Your objective is not to get as close to the number 21 as possible, but rather to beat the dealer. You can do this by either getting a hand value higher than the dealer's (without exceeding 21), or by letting the dealer draw cards over 21 (a "Bust"). Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10, an ace (A) is worth either 1 or 11, and the other cards represent their numerical value.
Get familiar with the terminology
To succeed at the tables, you must know the key terms and actions you can utilize during your turn:
- Hit: You ask the dealer for another card to increase your hand's value.
- Stand: You are satisfied with your hand and do not want any more cards.
- Double Down: You double your original bet and receive exactly one more card. An excellent move when your hand value is 10 or 11.
- Split: If your first two cards are of the same value (e.g., two eights), you can split them into two separate hands by placing a second bet.
- Surrender: In certain games, you can surrender a bad hand and only lose half of your bet.
Mathematical strategy (Basic Strategy)
Blackjack is a casino game with the lowest house edge – often under 0.5% – provided you play using perfect Basic Strategy. This strategy is a mathematically calculated chart that tells you the perfect move (Hit, Stand, Double, Split) in every possible situation based on your own hand and the dealer's visible upcard.
A rule of thumb, for example, is to always split aces and eights, but never split tens or fives. Similarly, if the dealer is showing a weak card (4, 5, or 6), it's often advisable for the player to stand on a lower hand value, because the probability of the dealer going over 21 (Bust) is high.
